- Guests contribute a donation of $10 to $20 each, which supports the performer.
- Light snacks, beverages, or a potluck dinner are commonly offered.
- Attendees usually include the host's friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
- Performances are by solo artists, duos, or small groups.
- Acts are presented with minimal sound equipment, or sometimes without any.
- The atmosphere is very intimate, with the audience seated closely and engaged.
- Performances consist of two 40-minute, separated by a 20-minute intermission.
- Merchandise sales for artists are typically stronger compared to traditional venues.
- The artist is often provided accommodation and meals for the night if they are traveling from over 90 miles away from Nashville.
